About

My name is Eddie Tay and I am a poet and university professor based in Hong Kong.

I am also the reviews editor of the literary journal CHA with which this blog is affiliated.

I have come to realise in recent years that the act of writing poetry has trained my mind to be always on the prowl for everyday moments that might be suitable material for my writing. I have turned to photography in order to record some of these moments.

I soon discover that the photographs I am taking, using film rangefinder and compact cameras which are more discreet and hence suitable to the task at hand, are in the tradition of street photography.

In search of poetry, I have become a street photographer.

What can Hong Kong teach me about street photography, and what can street photography teach me about Hong Kong?

This blog seeks to address that question.

I do write about street photography (among other things) in my research. More details here and here.

  1. I so admire the meditative or better put the mental threads that weave your photography and how you are able to deconstruct all this by the deployment of creative poetry. More Glories, and wonders. I’m your student, Prof Eddie. Glad connecting with a senior fellow poet and street photographer. Hoping to stay in touch.

  2. Thanks for visiting “What I Watched Last Night…” Your investigations into the relationships between poetry and photography sound fascinating.

  3. Hi, thanks for stopping by my blog. I look forward to following along with yours. I am headed to Hong Kong in December so if you have any tips on things to do I would love to hear them.
    Cheers!

  4. Thank you for liking my post and stopping by my blog. Hope you’ve had a great time during your stay here in Singapore. I hope you will come back here more often before the old Singapore is (totally) gone. I love Hong Kong for the food and shopping – I hope to be back there again in the near future 🙂

  5. Good afternoon Mr. Eddie.

You seem to be an amazing person, I love your taste in photography and your personality. This is the right type and taste I’m looking for to follow.

    Thanks for what you’re doing.
    Have a great day.

    Victor.

  6. Hi Eddie!
I am totes interested in photography. I live in a Chinese shophouse in Singapore, and I love taking pix of these buildings.
I’m also totes confused by what’s up in Hong Kong right now. The whole capitalism vs communism in China confuses the life out of me!

  9. Great blog Eddie. I moved to Hong Kong about 9 months ago and have spent nearly all of my free time on street photography so your content is really interesting to me. Hong Kong is a gold mine for photographers and I can go to the same place many times and still find new and interesting things to shoot. Thanks for sharing this!

      1. Eddie,
I have just remembered, the system you use is called the f16 rule, it is what is printed on the inside of the film cartons.

  12. Hi Eddie, thanks for visiting my blog & liking my post ‘Escapism’, it’s really appreciated. From reading your notes I feel we have a very similar philosophy to street photography.

Keep up the great work, I’ll be following with interest!

  13. Thanks for the visit and for liking my post My Mother’s Mother. Very pleased to get a “like” from a photographing poet. I’m also learning what I think from my photos … they just take place on a table top.
I shall follow your street photos with interest.
