Having lunch.

IMG_20150819_0012 640

Looks yummy.

IMG_20150819_0016 640

This is also a space of commodity.

IMG_20150819_0019 640

Though people do live and make a living here.

IMG_20150819_0022 640

Tiong Bahru Pao!

IMG_20150819_0023 640

Colourful drinks stall.

IMG_20150819_0025 640

Yummy hawker food!

IMG_20150819_0029 640

Touristy stalls.

IMG_20150819_0030 640

Waiting for Tintin.

Singapore’s Little India in Colour

My previous post on Little India was in b/w.

IMG_20150819_0002 640

These are in colour.

IMG_20150819_0003 640

Friends in conversation.

A framed place.

IMG_20150819_0010 640

A vegetable stall.

IMG_20150819_0017 640

I can’t resist another shot at the sign, as if to assure myself that everything has its place in Singapore.

Singapore’s Little India in B/W

These are b/w street photographs of Little India.

IMG_20150814_0022 640

Think of these as a nod towards Aik Beng Chia’s work on Little India.

IMG_20150814_0024 640

Check out his excellent work Tonight the Streets Are Ours here and here.

IMG_20150814_0026 640

There’s definitely a strong sense of community here.

IMG_20150814_0031 640

People are always in touch with one another.

IMG_20150814_0032 640

Scenes of friendship.

IMG_20150814_0033 640

Street scenes.

IMG_20150814_0034 640

Joy of the streets.

IMG_20150814_0035 640

The streets are institutionalized and framed.

IMG_20150814_0036 640

That doesn’t mean we should stop searching and looking.

Singapore Street Photography

These are various snapshots in Singapore, with no particular order or theme in mind.

IMG_20150814_0010 640

Though I must confess a significant number of images have to do with food…

IMG_20150814_0012 640

He’s eating.

IMG_20150814_0013 640

He’s texting.

IMG_20150814_0011 640

He’s working really hard.

IMG_20150814_0014 640

He’s buying.

IMG_20150814_0015 640

I’m buying.

IMG_20150814_0020 640

I’m buying some more.

IMG_20150814_0017 640

These, I suppose, make up part of what Singapore is.

Raffles Place Lunchtime

That’s the courtyard between the 2 main exits of Raffles Place MRT station.

IMG_20150814_0009 640

Lunchtime – that funny, in-between time that is part-leisure, part-work, part-consumption.

IMG_20150814_0001 640

People relaxing.

IMG_20150814_0002 640

Waiting.

IMG_20150814_0003 640

Posing.

IMG_20150814_0006 640

Catching up.

IMG_20150814_0007 640

Having a smoke break.

IMG_20150814_0005 640

All caught up and immersed in the ever-present, not too far away from a reminder from history, of how times have changed and will change again.

Building Singapore

Lots of street shots to do with construction workers.

IMG_20150820_0024 640

Quite literally, these are the people who built Singapore.

IMG_20150820_0025 640

I grew up in Singapore, and even to me, the heat is too much at times.

IMG_20150820_0026 640

So yes, this is hard work.

IMG_20150820_0030 640

These were taken at various places.

IMG_20150820_0032 640

The scenes are ubiquitous.

IMG_20150820_0035 640

Singapore depends a lot on foreign labour.

IMG_20150820_0033 640

Working behind the scenes.

IMG_20150820_0038 640

So we have these.

Penang’s Gurney Drive

I was in Penang recently with my family and many of the street pictures were taken with my Olympus XA 2, in-between vacation shots taken with my Canon 600D.

IMG_20150820_0001 640

The above was taken while riding a trishaw.

IMG_20150820_0002 640

Another shot, taken from a trishaw.

IMG_20150820_0014 640

The Gurney Drive street food market was where we found ourselves on most days.

IMG_20150820_0004 640

Fried oyster!

IMG_20150820_0006 640

Yummy!

IMG_20150820_0012 640

Lok lok!

IMG_20150820_0013 640

Laksa!

IMG_20150820_0018 640

That’s the “Chinese rojak” stall.

IMG_20150820_0019 640

That’s the Indian rojak stall.

IMG_20150820_0022 640

Sotong kangkong!

So yes, street food was on the top of our list at Penang.

On the streets of London with an Olympus XA2

An Olympus XA2 is light, small and discreet.

IMG_20150708_0002 640

I’d raise it to my eye and no one would notice.

IMG_20150708_0003 640

Even if they do notice, people would be less likely to react, compared to if you point at them with a gigantic Canon 5D Mark III.

IMG_20150708_0004 640

You could capture people and their environment – the lens is wide enough.

IMG_20150708_0006 640

There’s the interaction between person and space.

IMG_20150708_0008 640

Its convenience cannot be overemphasized – a matter of pulling the camera out of your cargo pants pocket when the opportunity presents itself.

Blindness to the Streets

There’s a blindness to the streets we need to learn to see.

IMG_20150707_0030 640

There’s the individual, and there’s society.

IMG_20150707_0031 640

The street looks back.

IMG_20150707_0035 640

We negotiate the streets.

IMG_20150707_0036 640

We work the streets.

IMG_20150707_0037 640

We refresh the streets.

IMG_20150707_0038 640

The street is at rest.

Street Photography, Street Wisdom

Never turn your back on the street.

IMG_20150707_0023 640

Some streets are for sale.

IMG_20150707_0024 640

Other streets are for friends.

IMG_20150707_0025 640

Streets are for hanging around.

IMG_20150707_0026 640

There’s a street attitude to tease out.

IMG_20150707_0027 640

You’ll never know who is looking from the street.

IMG_20150707_0028 640

Some streets are nicer.

IMG_20150707_0029 640

Some streets are more equal than others.
