Somewhere in Yuen Long

Sometimes I don’t know where I am.

IMG_20140829_0019 640

This place is accessible via a walking or biking trail.

IMG_20140829_0020 640

And you get to see a sinking village house.

IMG_20140829_0006 640

My wife organizes these day trips for the family and I simply tag along… I’m fortunate that way.

IMG_20140829_0007 640

I’ll go anywhere as long as there’re things to see.

IMG_20140829_0003 640

I know for sure this is somewhere in Yuen Long.

IMG_20140829_0009 640

And the village is accessible only via a boat.

IMG_20140829_0008 640

It’s another way of life.

IMG_20140829_0002 640

It’s a “can do” DIY attitude I need to learn.

IMG_20140829_0004 640

He saw my camera but basically ignored me and went on with his work.

IMG_20140829_0021 640

I’m trying to improve my Chinese.

IMG_20140829_0022 640

Assuming I got that right, it says “the only human-operated bumboat in the whole of Hong Kong, from 6am till 11pm”.

My set up for the day was a Contax TVS II loaded with Ilford XP2 400.

Singapore Speaks Monochrome

Singapore is a work in progress, and the physical landscape never fails to remind you of this.

_MG_9553 (2) 640

There could be cranes in the sky in built-up areas, and there could be views like the one below.

_MG_9553 640

Occasionally, it gets a bit postmodern, like this:

_MG_0783 640

The inside wants to be outside.

_MG_0785 640

Our desires/appetites/wants/needs are very well structured and catered to.

_MG_9471 640

_MG_9475 640

_MG_9479 (2) 640

Everything is for sale.

_MG_9489 (2) 640

Cities are places where appetites are met.

_MG_0811 640

_MG_0812 640

_MG_0815 640

Appetites transcend national boundaries …

_MG_0831 640

Pig organ soup, anyone? It’s actually quite yummy.

_MG_9560 (2) 640

Waiting.

_MG_9487 (2) 640

Doing.

_MG_9578 (2) 640

Working.

_MG_9606 640

Cooking.

_MG_9486 (2) 640

Buildings are structures of desires.

_MG_9746 640

There’s ambition in the architecture.

_MG_9492 (2) 640

These are homely desires.

_MG_9763 640

There’s an architecture of modernity.

_MG_9483 (2) 640

An architecture of nationhood.

_MG_9574 640

And space in which we simply do nothing at all.

Tranquillity

We all need to walk.

I have done this walk so many times now, that some of these images are lodged in my mind.

We all know how our external environments organize our internal state.

In a crowded shopping mall, we’re all a bit tense.

Look at water and we relax.

IMG_20140415_0036 640

We all need a depository of homely images in our mind.

IMG_20140415_0026 640

So we feel at home even outside of home.

IMG_20140415_0027 640

There’s a story of a family here waiting to be told.

IMG_20140415_0028 640

Just a little narrative.

IMG_20140415_0030 640

A little space.

IMG_20140415_0031 640

A scattering of things telling us who we are.

IMG_20140415_0034 640

Just a little window to the world. A little insight.

IMG_20140415_0037 640

A safe harbor.

IMG_20140415_0024 640

And we’re home.

Wu Kai Sha Beach

There’s something going on at Wu Kai Sha beach.

IMG_20131125_0027 A3 640

I keep seeing Zen-like arrangements:

IMG_20131125_0025 A3 640

The stones are speaking.

And there’s always someone painting the rocks. Sometimes, you see “God is love” in both English and Chinese etched in the sand.

And once in a while, someone builds a turtle sculpture…

IMG_20131128_0022 A3 640

This gentleman has been at it all morning…

The sand is reclaiming its boat:

IMG_20131128_0011 A3 640

The water has achieved what the sand is doing:

IMG_20131126_0004 A3 640

Am I a shadow thinking I am a man or a man thinking I am a shadow?

IMG_20131128_0012 A3 640

Or am I a shadow of a man or a man emerging from his shadow?

IMG_20131128_0014 A3 640

I text, google, search and take a picture – therefore I am.
