A Short Hike to the Next Village

We’ve about 2 hours to kill, so what better way to do it and get a bit of mild exercise than to go hiking, from our village to the next.

The theme of the day – rustic beauty. Debris at a nearby beach.

dscf0360-640

The colours are nice.

dscf0402-640

Up the steps.

dscf0420-640

Light at the end of the path.

dscf0444-640

Car, abandoned.

dscf0453-640

Nice green window.

dscf0477-640

Window and scarred wall of an abandoned village house.

dscf0492-640

Discarded electrical board.

Nice open view.

Bye bye village!

Final Things

Things as they are…

IMG_20151201_0015 640

A gate is always a promise.

IMG_20151201_0016 640

Perhaps a promise of bigger things to come.

IMG_20151201_0020 640

Something here.

IMG_20151201_0021 640

A hint of bigger things there…

IMG_20151202_0002 640

And something may blossom.

IMG_20151202_0001 640

All it takes is a bit of introspection…

IMG_20151202_0004 640

A possible vision here…

IMG_20151202_0005 640

And a revision there.

This is the last of four related pieces, after Mundane Objects, Common Things,  and Everyday Things.

Thanks for reading!

Everyday Things

These are things I see on a daily basis.

IMG_20151201_0017 640

James Elkins: “When we are confronted with an unfamiliar object … we seek a body in it; we try to see something like ourselves…” (The Object Stares Back, p. 129)

IMG_20151201_0019 640

I see, therefore I am.

IMG_20151201_0022 640

This is my mind, even if it’s only for a while.

IMG_20151201_0023 640

Sometimes I feel like this.

IMG_20151202_0003 640

Mostly though, I’m like this.

This is a third companion piece, after Mundane Objects and  Common Things.

Camera: Canon Prima Twin S

Film: Fuji Superia Venus 800

Common Things

This is just a follow up from my previous post, Mundane Objects.

IMG_20151201_0008 640

There’s always an exhibition waiting to happen.

IMG_20151201_0009 640

Things discarded, things poetic.

IMG_20151201_0010 640

To look is to give it meaning.

IMG_20151201_0011 640

A regulation of things.

IMG_20151201_0012 640

A potential.

IMG_20151201_0013 640

A hint.

IMG_20151201_0014 640

Something.

Camera: Canon Prima Twin S

Film: Fuji Superia Venus 800

Mundane Objects

I’m taking a break from street photography to look at mundane stuff.

IMG_20151201_0001 640

Stuff our eyes don’t normally focus on.

IMG_20151201_0002 640

But they do create an environment of sorts.

IMG_20151201_0003 640

Repeat something enough and it becomes a life.

IMG_20151201_0004 640

Pavements can be interesting.

IMG_20151201_0005 640

Stuff lying around.

IMG_20151201_0006 640

There’s an order of things here.

IMG_20151201_0007 640

A call to discipline.

The Management of Space in a Village

It goes without saying that space is at a premium in Hong Kong.

IMG_20151126_0001 640

This is true even in the more rural areas.

IMG_20151126_0002 640

Things need to stay organized.

IMG_20151126_0003 640

Nature needs to know its place.

IMG_20151126_0004 640

Heidegger: “Everywhere everything is ordered to stand by, to be immediately at hand, indeed to stand there just so that it may be on call for a further ordering. Whatever is ordered about in this way has its own standing. We call it the standing-reserve.”

IMG_20151126_0005 640

It’s all standing by.

IMG_20151126_0006 640

Nothing is to be wasted.

IMG_20151126_0007 640

It’s all about discipline.

IMG_20151126_0008 640

Places to go, and places you can’t go.

IMG_20151126_0009 640

All these structures are standing, even in our literal absence.

The Management of Space

We’re all very space conscious in Hong Kong.

IMG_20150929_0002 640

Everyone is watchful.

IMG_20150929_0003 640

Are windows for looking in or looking out?

IMG_20150929_0005 640

We’re mindful of where not to go.

IMG_20150929_0006 640

We know where we are at all times.

IMG_20150929_0007 640

Even nature has discipline.

IMG_20150929_0012 640

A tree bends to seek a path.

IMG_20150929_0009 640

A home is both inside and outside.

IMG_20150929_0010 640

Storage space is outside.

IMG_20150929_0011 640

A home is a store.

Another Place in HK

Sometimes, we need to disappear into that rabbit hole.

IMG_20150929_0022 640

To an alternative Hong Kong.

IMG_20150929_0001 640

Where you could walk at your own pace and not worry about obstructing others on a crowded pavement.

IMG_20150929_0015 640

You could take your time (and not have it taken away from you).

IMG_20150929_0024 640

You could just stay put.

IMG_20150929_0016 640

Have some peace of mind.

IMG_20150929_0027 640

And mental space.

Somewhere in Yuen Long

Sometimes I don’t know where I am.

IMG_20140829_0019 640

This place is accessible via a walking or biking trail.

IMG_20140829_0020 640

And you get to see a sinking village house.

IMG_20140829_0006 640

My wife organizes these day trips for the family and I simply tag along… I’m fortunate that way.

IMG_20140829_0007 640

I’ll go anywhere as long as there’re things to see.

IMG_20140829_0003 640

I know for sure this is somewhere in Yuen Long.

IMG_20140829_0009 640

And the village is accessible only via a boat.

IMG_20140829_0008 640

It’s another way of life.

IMG_20140829_0002 640

It’s a “can do” DIY attitude I need to learn.

IMG_20140829_0004 640

He saw my camera but basically ignored me and went on with his work.

IMG_20140829_0021 640

I’m trying to improve my Chinese.

IMG_20140829_0022 640

Assuming I got that right, it says “the only human-operated bumboat in the whole of Hong Kong, from 6am till 11pm”.

My set up for the day was a Contax TVS II loaded with Ilford XP2 400.
