Exhibition Prep

So, I’m in the midst of preparing for a solo photography exhibition, to be held on campus.

And experimenting with various papers I’ve collected.

Photographs on mobile phone/tablet/computer screens are not the same as print photographs.

The materiality of photography is a fascinating thing indeed.

Some printing mistakes, and a few books that inspire me.

I’m teaching an MA course on social media, photography and writing, so many ideas are floating around in my head even as I’m prepping for the exhibition.

It’s all coming together … photography, literature, critique.

Nietzsche, Foucault, etc., have asked that question – how can we live our lives deliberately, such that our lives become works of art?

Another Place in HK

Sometimes, we need to disappear into that rabbit hole.

To an alternative Hong Kong.

Where you could walk at your own pace and not worry about obstructing others on a crowded pavement.

You could take your time (and not have it taken away from you).

You could just stay put.

Have some peace of mind.

And mental space.

Against a Wall

This has been done many times before.

I really like this wall.

There’s texture, brick by brick.

The colour is luminous.

The window is dark enough.

I’m a fly on the wall.

Nice door.

There’s no end to the stream of individuals.

All deep in thought.

Conversing with their individual humanity.

The street markets of Shamshuipo are very busy.

There’s a constant assault of colours.

There’s so much movement.

So much that may be hidden.

That you can’t take what you see for granted.

Every scene is a visual poem.

The camera is a notebook with which to write.

Olympus XA 3

Sometimes, it is a pain when you realize that what you have is actually good enough.

Sad is the man who realizes he does not have a good excuse to buy another camera.

What happens if you’re already happy with your Olympus XA 2 as a street camera?

You go out and buy an Olympus XA 3, of course.

It’s the same difference.

There’re differences between a Olympus XA 2 and XA 3, of course.

What this also means is that I could go out with 2 different films.

One could be loaded with a colour film and the other with a b/w film.

Or they could have films of different ISOs.

Ah – the joys of street photography.

Walking Around

I have so many posts of the street markets at Shamshuipo.

My only excuse is that things are always changing, and the streets are never the same from hour to hour.

I’d wonder about the kind of life stories people have.

What would we say, if we have had a chance to speak about ourselves to one another?

I’m the guy with the camera who thinks too much.

While someone else is having his siesta.

The streets are so busy.
